Mind your backs please

Article Abstract:

Chronic back pain is much easier to prevent than to cure since conventional medicine often does not work. Back pain can result when an invertebral disc, often between the lowest lumbar vertebra and the top of pelvis, slips and catches a fiber of the sciatic nerve. This gives rise to whatis known as sciatica, manifested in pain in the low back, pain and numbness in the back of the leg and even a floppy foot. Most back pain results when the vertebrae and soft tissues get slightly malaligned. Non-specialists may misdiagnose these back aches as lumbago, mechanical back pain or musculoskeletal disorder and prescribe the standard treatment of lying in bed and taking painkillers. These prescriptions work for 90% of acute back problems. Those who do not respond to this treatment may consider conventional physiotherapy or osteopathy. Measures to prevent back pains include exercising regularly, losing weight if necessary, using comfortable chairs and avoiding high heels.
