Modern Russia: more bull than bear

Article Abstract:

The Russian stock market performed best of emerging markets during 1996 and has also performed well in 1997. Fund managers have been attracted to Russia following problems in some Asian markets. Russian economic reforms appear to be bearing fruit and likely to continue, while the economy appears to have troughed. There are still problems such as legislation on stock ownership and Russian's tax system. There are risks involved in the Russian market, and investors could also consider funds covering other countries in eastern Europe.

On the edge

Article Abstract:

Russian stock prices dropped from the start of Oct 1997 for nine weeks, only beginning a recovery in Dec 1997. This drop in prices was linked to the Asian financial crisis and fear that the Russian debt market could collapse due to a decrease in confidence in government finances. Interest rates would then rise and the ruble would drop in value, leading to bankruptcy for Russian banks. Major structural and fiscal reforms are needed for the Russian market to become less vulnerable.
