Modularity, flexibility, and knowledge management in product and organization design

Article Abstract:

A study examined the interconnections among product design, organization design, learning processes, knowledge management processes and competitive strategy. Through the principles of nearly decomposable systems, the ability of standardized interfaces between product design stages to incorporate coordination of product development processes was established. It was found that such embedded coordination generates hierarchical coordination without regularly imposing control. Concepts of modularity in product and organization designs according to standardized component and organization interfaces were developed. Loosely coupled parts of a modular organization design, held together by information structures created through modular product architectures, enable modularity to minimize the cost and hardship of adaptive coordination. The strategic flexibility of firms to adapt to environmental change is improved.

The resource-based view within the conversation of strategic management

Article Abstract:

The resource-based approach to strategic management science encourages conversation between scholars from diverse academic backgrounds. The resource-based framework is particularly compatible with concepts of mainstream strategy research, the organizational economics paradigm, and industrial organization research. This approach is not a comprehensive theory of corporate growth, but it does offer a generalizable theory of the expansion of companies. Several areas of the resource-based approach, however, needs further study. These include the consolidation of literature on corporate diversification and organizational economics, the creation of an endogenous theory of heterogeneity, and the incorporation of strategic group analysis and industry analysis into the resource-based view.
