NCR 3125 Notepad Computer

Article Abstract:

NCR Corp's NCR 3125 NotePad computer won a Best of Category award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The NCR 3125, considered the lightest and thinnest personal computer in the world to date, boasts all the power of an 80386 sl/20 Mhz microprocessor chip and a 16KB cache memory. It consists of a detachable battery pack, a cordless electronic stylus and an LCD/digital visual display. The design was praised for its uncluttered simplicity inspite of the many options and features available to the user. The design was the work of NCR Corp in-house designer Werner Stephan and Phoenix Products Design's Tom Schonherr and Andreas Haug.

CM-5 Massively Parallel Supercomputer

Article Abstract:

Thinking Machines Corp's CM-5 Massively Parallel Supercomputer won a Best of Category award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. Each modular unit of the CM-5 is six feet long by three feet deep by seven feet high. Additional modules can be attached to cover 1/3 of the depth of the previous module, so that a zigzag or lightning pattern is created with a succession of several modules. The design, created with the collaboration of monument designer Maya Lin, seems to express the monumental capabilitites of the supercomputer, which can process 40 billion instructions per second.

Cray Y-MP C90 Supercomputer

Article Abstract:

Cray Research Inc's Y-MP C90 Supercomputer won a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The Cray Y-MP C90 is reputed to be the most powerful computer in its class. The unusual imagery produced by the form, color and details of its external appearance was characterized as very evocative of its tremendous capabilities. Povlika Logan Design of Minneapolis, MN created the design.
