UK: COMPETITION BETWEEN ONLINE SUPERMARKETS
Article Abstract:
The news that UK supermarket group Tesco is to extend the range of its Tesco Direct online service has heightened the stake among supermarket Internet retailers. Among the other stores entering the market are Iceland, with a national online service, Somerfield, with a 24-7 service in London and Bristol, and Marks & Spencer, currently conducting a pilot scheme. Sainsbury's is lagging behind, with an Orderline service which operates only within the limits of the M25 motorway, but has recently spent GB[pound] 15mn on updating its website. According to Verdict, up to 2% of grocery transactions may be carried out online by 2004, and future developments may include the opening of customer-access depots. It is also thought that digital and interactive television will play an increasingly important role in online supermarket shopping.
