New model unions

Article Abstract:

Trade union influence has been waning in Great Britain since the 1970s. Membership plummeted from more than 12 million in 1979 to about nine million, and unions are redefining themselves. They are upgrading their training programs in all areas of industry. Some unions are pressing for single union and no strike agreements, which may help improve management-labor relations for British industry in general. Strikes have also dropped to a 50-year low. Many splinter unions are beginning to amalgamate. Decentralization and a trend toward less hierarchical structure are also common among unions. The present economic environment and new governmental union legislation will continue to advance these trends.

James McKinnon

Article Abstract:

James McKinnon is the director general of the Office of Gas Supply (Ogfas) after a life in private industry. McKinnon sees the regulatory role of Ogfas as helping to develop a successful role for British Gas and to compensate for the company's current lack of competition. McKinnon believes that Ogfas must assume an adversarial role in order to get the information it needs to manage the interests of customers and mimic competitive forces. McKinnon believes that the environment is ripe for companies to establish a competitive challenge to the current monopoly enjoyed by British Gas.
