Changing times

Article Abstract:

Diversification does not appear to be a helpful strategy in financial marketsin 2000, and it is also difficult to locate appropriate benchmarks. Non-technology stocks are facing problems and some have come to resemble sunset industries, with stock prices falling and margins being squeezed. There is talk that new indices should be developed, but distortions are likely to persist while glamor stocks are seen as the best investment. Meanwhile, ways of assessing internet situations are being developed by fund managers.

Article Abstract:

It is difficult to assess the impact of internet companies, and whether they are changing the world or just allowing information to be transmitted more rapidly. Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, has said that he does not understand how the internet is affecting the US economy. Economic growth is not slowing, and he is only able to use interest rates as a way of curbing demand. A slow rise in rates is not likely to halt economic growth when it is easy to borrow against gains from the stock market.

The drop in prices for technology stocks has led to greater rationality is assessing their prospects. Internet retailing stocks are not likely to recover as fast as technology stocks.
