Offshore lure lies in tax advantage

Article Abstract:

Offshore investments may payments with no tax deductions and this allows tax to be deferred by UK investors. Personal equity plans (Peps) and other tax-free investments have made offshore investments less attractive, and open-ended investment companies are also expected to represent serious competition. Offshore funds are especially useful for investors who aim to reside abroad, or are due to retire. The possibility of deferral of tax allows tax to be paid at a lower rate. Some funds are marketed in the UK, where an approved standard has been reached.

How to cash in on moneymakers' success

Article Abstract:

Unit trusts investing in the financial sector aim to benefit from the strong performance of the sector in the 1990s. Market consolidation and demographic factors have both fueled growth. Takeover activity has pushed up stock prices, though there have been concerns about doubtful debts which have led to profit taking. Insurers and banks are likely to be affected by continued consolidation, and technological advances should help to keep costs down, according to financial analyst, Philip Gibbs.
