PROMETHEUS
Article Abstract:
The PROMETHEUS European road transport efficiency and safety enhancement programme is complete. Telecommunications and information technologies have been used to develop a short-range communication link between roadside microwave beacons and on-board units (OBUs) within vehicles. The beacons work at 5.8 GHz and can be used to link road and other transportation modes, support on-board technology and provide information for drivers. PROMETHEUS has been a collaboration of all the leading automobile makers in Europe and several leading electronics companies such as GEC-Marconi Research Centre (MRC).

The imaging of oil slicks by synthetic-aperture radar
Article Abstract:
Synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) is used to produce images of oil slicks. Imaging is based on surface wave damping, and Marangoni resonant-type damping effects have been found with oil slicks. The Bragg-scattering model is used as the basis for studying forecasts in radar backscatter changes between surrounding sea and the slick. Slicks must be located and tracked automatically for SAR observations to be useful in monitoring pollution. ERS-1 and other spaceborne SAR systems are evaluated, with prior spaceborne and airborne SAR oil slick observations discussed.

An Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) image of a Boeing 747, measured at F-band
Article Abstract:
An Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) image has been produced of a Boeing 747 by the GEC-Marconi Research Centre (MRC). The Multi-Function Radar equipment at the centre was used to produce the image as a proof-of-concept demonstration. The radar remains stationary while the target is rotated to create a change of aspect angle of the target throughout the period of imaging. The ISAR process is described.
