Picking and mixing

Article Abstract:

UK investors who wish for greater security through diversifying their inestments in shares can opt for a type of unit trust called a fund of funds. This invests in other funds, thus minimising problems that could arise if one fund performs poorly. Some funds of funds are independent and others are tied to funds run by a particular company. Independent funds may have higher charges but can select the best funds rather than having to choose from one company's funds. Funds of funds tend not to be among the top performers, but they are low-risk, and tend not to perform very badly either.

Corporate bond Peps: so far, so good

Article Abstract:

UK corporate bond personal equity plans (Peps) were introduced in 1995 and are geared to investors needing income at low risk and hoping for better rates than provided by building societies. Investing in the stock market can bring better returns but risk levels are higher. These Peps account for some 20% of total Peps and they have been successful in attracting investors. They have performed well in an environment of low interest rates, but this could change as rates rise, when fixed-interest products may not be the best investment.

The comfort of optional extras

Article Abstract:

Most UK workers are not saving enough for a comfortable retirement, according to Allied Dunbar. Workers who take breaks, retire early or start saving for a pension late are especially vulnerable. There are tax benefits for additional payments into pension schemes within limits imposed by the tax authorities. Additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) have to cease with job changes while free standing contributions can be carried on after a job change.
