Article Abstract:

The payroll-deduction scheme for charitable donations allows an employer to deduct up to 50 pounds sterling a month per employee before tax is calculated. The money deducted is then donated on the employee's behalf to a registered agency for distribution to a charity of the employee's choice. This system, modeled on the US system of tax-deductible charitable giving, has been permitted in the UK since 1987, but has failed to attract significant interest. A charities executive attributes the system's lack of popularity to the failure of charities to sell the idea properly to companies.
