Poland is a rising star

Article Abstract:

Poland is one of the most attractive markets in eastern Europe, due to its long-term prospects. Polish economic growth was above 6% for 1994 to 1995, and could continue at over 5% until after 2000. Poland benefits from an entrepreneurial culture with the private sector accounting for more than 60% of the Polish economy. The stock market began operations in 1991 and has tended to be geared to Polish investors, but reforms should improve liquidity and access for foreign investors.

Hold-ups on the Equity autostrada

Article Abstract:

The Italian stock market may benefit from an announcement that Fiat will resume payments of dividends. Fiat has benefited from a fall in the value of the Italian lira, but a weak lira has also pushed up commodity prices and fueled inflation. Italy is faced with fiscal challenges and pension reform is insufficient to solve the budget deficit. Inflation and a weak lira are likely to dampen the enthusiasm of foreign investors for Italian shares.
