A new five-year guideline for the drug industry issued by China's powerful National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has given high priority to the development of biotechs and linked the sector's growth with improvements in drug distribution and in the healthcare system. The new policy ranks biopharmaceuticals as a field in which China could eventually compete successfully with developed countries, and emphasizes the need to use life science tools to boost research in conventional drug development.

The hopes of the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) are dashed with tragic personal consequences for Zheng Xiaoyu and allegations of widespread corruption by Chinese officials. Zheng's execution and life imprisonment of his subordinates have highlighted the intention of the Chinese authorities to make a strong public statement that corruption will not be tolerated by the SFDA.

GM rice forges ahead in China amid concerns over illegal planting
