Article Abstract:

A longitudinal analysis of the application of full-cost pricing during the first five years of the UK National Health Service (NHS) internal market is presented. The suitability of this pricing mechanism for the NHS is then evaluated. It is concluded that achieving efficient health resources allocation through full-cost pricing is by nature problematic because of the complex nature of health care costs and the operation of the NHS internal market.
