Private investigations

Article Abstract:

Investors may wish to assess the performance of their personal pensions in case they need to take action. They should be able to understand charges for pension schemes, in case they are too high. Front end commissions affect the performance of a fund, but once they have been taken, it is important to assess the performance of future contributions. Factors that can affect performance include fund performance, monthly policy fees, and when contributions are allocated, and whether this is prior to the deduction of the bib-offer spread.

Looking ahead

Article Abstract:

Self-invested personal pensions (Sipps) have become mainstream products in the 10 years to 1999, and some 50,000 Sipp holders exists in Britain, with assets of more than 6.1 billion pounds sterling. The development of Sipps has not been rapid, partly because of lack of enthusiasm from independent financial advisers. Hybrid Sipps have been offered by insurers, but they have drawbacks. Sipps offer tax relief for pension contributions, and a sum of up to 25% can be taken at retirement, with no tax liablility.
