Ra: future policy directions and a strategic framework for solar research and applications

Article Abstract:

The International Space University's 1996 Summer Session Solar Probe Design Project culminated in the production of a report on the future of solar exploration and applications entitled 'Ra: The Sun for Science and Humanity.' This contains a three-part plan for international solar exploration and applications which sets down short-term, medium-term and long-term goals. In the long-term section, participants emphasize the integration of solar warning and forecasting with space physics research and programmes to connect solar physics with long-term changes in the Earth's climate.

Missions to the outer solar system and beyond

Article Abstract:

The second IAA symposium on interstellar space exploration was held in Aosta, Italy, on June 29-July 1, 1998. The papers presented showed the need for a space-based infrastructure in the Earth-lunar volume. Among the space-based structures proposed are the laser-pushed lightsail propulsion system, solar sails and antenna-based technologies. One paper discussed the need for a new propulsion system which would allow significant accelerations with acceptable strains and stresses, while another paper showed a possible analogues between supersonic and superluminal flights
