Advertising's biggest grass rooters

Article Abstract:

Advertising professionals in small American towns (such as Waco, Texas and Bristol, Tennessee) shape the American Advertising Federation (AAF) into the best defender of advertising. Howard Bell has been president of the AAF for 20 years. The organization started in 1905, has 40,000 members, and strong media representation at the local level. The AAF has three special programs: the Local Advertising Review Program, the State Legislative Alert and Action Coalition, and the National Student Advertising Competition. Various services and programs sponsored by the AAF are briefly described.

Washington - no trouble for O'Toole

Article Abstract:

John O'Toole, the head of the American Association of Advertising Agencies in Washington, D.C., is a registered lobbyist who boasts the successful overthrowing of Senator Packwood's proposal on corporate tax-deductible advertising expenditures. O'Toole and his organization are against the proposed tobacco advertising ban and favor free television air time for political candidates. O'Toole stresses the need to protect the First Amendment rights of advertisers, despite the popularity or lack thereof among D.C. legislators.
