Rolls-Royce: Rolls may shed peripheral lines

Article Abstract:

Rolls-Royce is selling its steam turbines business and could sell other divisions that are not central to its main operations of aerospace. Divisions that could be sold include materials handling, transmission and switching. The steam turbines division generated a loss of 30 million pounds sterling for Rolls Royce in 1995. The company's decision is welcomed by analysts though plant closures could cost 200 million pounds sterling if no buyer is found for the steam turbines operations.

Europe's fighter finally primed for action

Article Abstract:

A vote by the German Bundestag will decide whether the Eurofighter aircraft project will start production on a full scale. There have been problems with the finance for this project as well as technical problems, though it will create jobs and the aircraft is cheaper than some other options. Critics see the Eurofighter as obsolete compared to the F-22, which is much more expensive. The project will have a major impact on the aerospace and defense sector of the United Kingdom.

Worry over R-R margins

Article Abstract:

Rolls-Royce has increased its stake in the aero engines market but analysis are still cautious about the company's stocks. Paribas is concerned that initial margins could be low, and is one of four brokers rating the company's stocks a hold, the other three being Merill Lynch, Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull and Charterhouse Tilney. BZW and Collins Stewart, in contrast, both rate Roll-Royce stocks a buy, and see further years of recovery for the industry.
