SMJ 1995 best paper prize to Danny Miller

Article Abstract:

Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) has conferred the SMJ 1995 Best Paper Prize to Danny Miller for his 1986 article entitled 'Configurations of Strategy and Structure: Toward A Synthesis.' Since its publication, the paper has made a significant mark on scholarship and teaching in the field of strategic research. Its impact is evidenced by the fact that it has become required reading for doctoral students. SMJ started giving out this award in 1993 to recognize outstanding papers published in the journal. The paper award is offered annually and recognizes only nominated papers that have been published in SMJ over five years earlier. Recipients get a $5,000 prize and a commemorative plaque. More importantly, they bask in the recognition of the community of scholars. The award is co-sponsored by the Strategic Management Society and John Wiley and Sons.

The dominant logic: retrospective and extension

Article Abstract:

The 1986 paper 'The dominant logic: a new linkage between diversity and performance' became the first article to be adjudged as the Best Paper by Strategic Management Journal. Development of this winning piece was motivated by three factors: the paucity of strategic management studies that used a managerial approach, the tendency of diversification and performance researchers to regress a group of economic or accounting variables and a measure of diversification on a return measure, and the problems encountered by managers in major diversification initiatives. Since the first publication, however, the original conceptualization of dominant logic has steadily evolved. It has become more attuned with environmental-driven change than with diversification-driven change as a result of the growing ubiquity of environmental change.

The dominant logic: a new linkage between diversity and performance

Article Abstract:

The concept of dominant general management logic (DGML) is used as a possible component in the relationship between corporate diversification and financial performance. DGML refers to the prevailing frame of reference used to govern and guide diversification in a company or business accustomed to one way of thinking and managing. DGML often works but is sometimes misapplied. Several other explanations have been offered, but none offer a comprehensive theory of successful diversification.
