Safe harbour for the new armada?
Article Abstract:
The cruise industry is on a remarkable growth path. In the UK, cruise holidays have been increasing 10% to 12% per year. One million Europeans are estimated to take a cruise holiday in 1995 while five million Americans are expected to go on an ocean-going holiday. In fact, the cruising business in the US has already become a mass market operation, with the Caribbean being the most popular destinations. In response to this boom, cruise lines are ordering new ships from European shipyards, the most spectacular of which is P&O's Oriana, a 69,000-ton mammoth cruise flagship that will feature the biggest swimming pool on sea, 14 decks, a four-deck glass atrium, a giant theatre and an accommodation for over 18,000 passengers. However, difficulties may challenge the business in the near future. Island communities are demanding part of the profit from cruise lines. The threat of overcapacity may also dampen future growth.

Perk-driven recovery for motor market
Article Abstract:
The Chancellor of the Exchequer's move to raise taxes on company cars has resulted in a boom in the UK automobile industry instead of the expected market slump. When then Chancellor Norman Lamont announced the tax hike in 1993, he risked the ire of the car manufacturers, the company managers who use company cars as part of their benefits package, and the hundreds of thousands of employees who will be made to pay higher taxes on their use of the cars. However, by the time the tax increases were implemented in Apr. 1994, both employers and employees have already come to realize that company cars remain an attractive incentive even with the 500 to 600 pounds sterling added to the employees' annual tax bill. Consequently, the sale of cars to companies has increased tremendously. In fact, corporations bought 70% of the 1.91 million cars sold in the UK in 1994.
