Scenes from the electronic city

Article Abstract:

Technological innovations have drastically changed human relationships and the traditional perception of space and time, with advances in the fields of telecommunications and transportation virtually eliminating distance and time concerns. Virtual reality technology, currently under development, is highly regarded as the ultimate realization of the abolition of physical barriers. These scientific breakthroughs have gradually forced people to relate with unreal objects through electronic media in all aspects of existence, thereby causing the loss of their identities and privacy as a consequence.

Cartoon cities

Article Abstract:

The grid pattern was popular with architects because it symbolized equality and order, but has led to the creation of cities lacking in cultural context. The renovation done in Seville and Barcelona to prepare for Expo '92 and the Olympics respectively prove this statement to be true. Cultural context has also been destroyed due to the fact that cultural symbols, such as Coke, television and cartoons, have become so widespread. It is now being realized that urban dwellers provide the cultural context for the city, for it is their way of life that gives a city its special character.

To the Board of Directors of the International Design Conference in Aspen

Article Abstract:

The refusal to attend the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado, will signify opposition to the approval of Amendment 2, which nullifies civil-rights security for homosexuals. The plans to denounce the legislation in the conference will be perceived as passive, and will adversely influence the people's perception of the design community.
