Scottish & Newcastle Breweries PLC

Article Abstract:

The Adam Smith Ltd review of Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) Breweries PLC is presented. S&N is seeking to improve its return on assets after recovering from the initial stake-building of New Zealander Sir Ron Brierly. S&N is moving into the leisure sector and has sold its hotel division. S&N has taken a 100% stake in Center Parcs NV, which specializes in short-stay holidays, the fasting growing sector of the European vacation market. S&N has also acquired Mathew Brown Plc, Howe Brewery Plc, and Theakston Ltd in order to increase its share of the beer market. S&N, the UK distributor of Beck's Beer, has recently entered into a deal to import the Czech beer Pilsner Urquell, and its own brand, Newcastle Brown Ale, is growing at a 15% annual rate.

General Accident

Article Abstract:

General Accident (GA) is a British insurance company founded in 1885, mainly to provide services for local employers who were liable for workers' accidents. The firm has expanded locally and internationally since then, and it is now considered one of the UK's biggest business enterprises. GA paid more than it expected to pay for the NZI group, which included NZI Bank. GA has turned the losses resulting from the acquisition into a small profit. Despite unpleasant and costly experiences, GA continues to show good financial health and its capability to increase its global market share.
