Shipping line faces sterling crisis: a flurry of deals by P&O aims to staunch its long-running underperformance

Article Abstract:

P&O, a transport and property conglomerate has seen its share price affected by the poor shipping and property markets and unsound strategic decisions. However it recently agreed a shipping joint venture with Royal Nedlloyd, and a the merger of its cross-Channel ferry business with Stena, although the deal has been referred to the Monopolies & Mergers Commission. The company's borrowings have increased to 92% of shareholders' funds in 1996, compared to 47% in 1991. There is a possibility that the company could merge with Yusen Kaisha of Japan or Neptune Orient Line of Singapore, according to industry sources.

Trafalgar House

Article Abstract:

Trafalgar House is a UK engineering, construction and shipbuilding concern which has performed poorly in 1995. The company has had to compensate passengers on the QE2 vessel and has had to reassess its fleet's value. Engineering has also produced losses with Davy and Sofresid performing poorly, along with losses from Cunard, the shipping arm. Cunard and the UK housebuilding arm, Ideal Homes, could be sold if the Trafalgar House's position deteriorates further.
