Newspapers have stepped up their efforts to woo national advertisers. They are providing reliable, national demographic readership data. They have also simplified the system for placing and paying for ads. Some newspaper industry leaders are ready to compete strongly against television for advertisers. Some newspaper marketing efforts are described. Newspapers still must solve the problem of how to offer discounts to national advertisers.
