Smith and Nephew has turned around since Chris O'Donnell was appointed as chief executive in 1997, and the company has restructured its board room as well as moving its headquarters to modern premises. The company ranks first in wound management world wide following the acquisition of the collagenase anzyme in Jan 2000 from BASF. The enzyme removes diseased tissue, leaving healthy flesh. The North American market accounted for 40% of the company's sales in 1999, which were over one billion pounds sterling.
