How practitioners rate tax software packages

Article Abstract:

Twenty-six tax preparation software packages are individually reviewed. The programs are all designed for the in-house processing of tax returns. Each package is evaluated according to its base price, random access memory requirements, hard disk requirements, help screen features, copy protection, and integration with other packages. It also assesses each tax preparation package's network functionality, input screen function for tax forms, applicability to specific states, and integration capabilities with other software. The availability of planning modules, print templates, laser forms, and client and customized letters is also given consideration. A list that provides the addresses of the companies offering the software under review is also provided.

Windows may not be right for many practitioners

Article Abstract:

Although Microsoft Windows 3.0 offers certain advantages such as extended memory capability, multi-tasking, overall memory management, and graphics, it is not generally recommended for use in tax accounting. Productivity losses, applications costs, hardware requirements, and weak multitasking are just some of the difficulties experienced with the use of Windows. Accountants and businesses in search of a better software package should try Quarterdeck Office Systems' DESQview because, like Windows, it is compatible with Novell NetWare but it runs faster and more effectively even on cheaper computers.
