A new breed of small and mid-sized Canadian accounting firms are establishing themselves in an increasingly competitive market by integrating a mix of strategic alliances, specialization, new/niche services and technology into their practices. Their activities are underscoring what appears to be a growing need for accounting firms, regardless of size, to stratify along industry specialty lines to exploit a tremendous explosion of new businesses.

The urge to merge

Article Abstract:

The merger mania engulfing accounting firms is not in the best interest of the clients, according to Harley Mintz, a partner at Mintz & Partners of Toronto, Canada, a view shared by the majority. He says that his most serious concern is that consolidation will diminish competition among the major companies. The so-called Big Six have decreased to the Big Five since the Jul 1, 1998 merger of Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand.
