Article Abstract:

The French government plans a privatization of Usinor Sacilor, the biggest steel producer in Europe. The company has improved its efficiency, but is faced with problems in the international steel market since a downturn in the steel market is expected from 1996. The French government has privatized the most obvious candidates, leaving problematic enterprises such as Usinor Sacilor until later. The government has to decide on a price which will attract investors given past losses of this company.

Steel Burrill Jones, an insurance broker, is finding market conditions testing as it competes in the retail brokerage sector. About two thirds of the company's insurance income is settle on a fee basis which is not as exposed to the highs and lows of insurance premiums. However fees are usually lower than broking commissions. SBJ's other business is in the London insurance market, but premiums are on the decline.
