Article Abstract:
Dalton, GA-based Shaw Industries, the largest manufacturer of tufted carpets and rugs, devised a production and marketing strategy that would improve the company's market share in a highly-competitive industry. Shaw built its own and purchased several retail outlets to gain leverage with the competition. Shaw developed its own fiber production plants and integrated all aspects of the supply chain to come up with better quality rugs. Shaw adopted environmentally-friendly policies such as significantly reducing its production waste as well as finding other recycling and recovery techniques.

The Global Transpark network: creating an infrastructure support system for agile manufacturing
Article Abstract:
US manufacturing will need to be more vital and productive in the future to better compete in changing global markets. To do so, a well-planned infrastructure composed of the best in telecommunications, transportation, storage and other services must be adopted to aid agile manufacturing. The North Carolina Global TransPark (GTP) is a prototype project that integrates all the systems that companies need to be more competitive in international markets. GTP is expected to be part of manufacturing and transport complexes that will alter the way that US firms will compete globally.

Ford Motor Co.'s North Penn Electronics Facility (NPEF) recognizes that only through continuous improvement in everything it does can it better compete in a global manufacturing environment. To attain its goal of being the top automotive firm worldwide by the year 2000, Ford's NPEF adopted three elements as part of its quest for improvement, namely, quality operating system, management by objectives and leaders' commitment to empowerment. NPEF has achieved improvements in supplier quality, defect prevention and customer returns.
