Streptococcal genomes provide food for thought

Article Abstract:

The complete genome sequences of two strains of Streptococcus thermophilus, which is a lactic acid bacterium involved in the production of yogurt and cheese, is presented. Studies show that the advancement in genome technology could assist in the development of environmental and clinical microbiology, biotechnology and other fields involving bacteria such as the dairy industry and food industry.

The best of both worlds in plant protection

Article Abstract:

Combining into fusion protein the potency of the former with the specificity of the latter, Peschen et al. have created molecules that can protect transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants from infection by a pathogenic Fusarium. The DNA encoding this antibody is then fused to the coding sequence of a peptide or protein that is shown before to have antimicrobial peptides.
