Automobile distributor DC Cook's shares are trading at a discount of around a third to the company's net asset value of 56p. Its forward PE ratio for 1998 is less than six times. The company is not an attractive bid target, as it is 51.5%-owned by the Cook family, which is very keen to retain control. Brokers predict pre-tax profits of 5.1 million pounds sterling and earnings per share of 8.1p for the year to Apr 1998. The company is expanding aggressively, gaining new franchises and building up its used car sales activities.

Lookers: ticking over nicely

Lookers is a UK motor dealer which saw a rise in its share value in 1994. The company has some 50 dealerships and a stable top management. The company has not reported a loss for a long time, except for a 1992 loss linked to tax provisions. Lookers has also not reduced its dividend for a very long time, and has been a steady performer. The company's share price is likely to revive in 4th qtr 1995, and Lookers shares are thus recommended to investors in Sep 1995.
