Survey findings: putting a priority on clarity
Article Abstract:
Findings of a recent survey of Scottish business organizations conducted jointly by CA Magazine and the Capital House revealed that auditors tend to be selected more on the basis of their contact and availability of advice rather than their fees. It was also found that a sizeable portion of the firms polled engaged the services of auditors to obtain added value audit, such as general finance and business advice. Most participants rated coporate tax advice, accounts preparation and personal tax advice as being more important than the other services offered by auditors. More than half of those surveyed reported perceiving any change in the quality of service provided by accounting firms, while 26% said they detected a change for the worse. Some of the more frequently suggested improvements in the services of accountants are that they be more pro-active in giving advice, and provide better value for money and better breakdown of fees.

Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola and Schweppes Beverages Financial Planning Controller Paul Boyle has obtained a great deal of financial experience during his eight-year career. "There's no exam on it." (implementing quality initiatives) (Quality Case Study)
Article Abstract:
Raymond Blin, managing partner of Pannell Kerr Forster in Glasgow, Scotland, believes that any corporate quality initiative will not succeed without the right organizational culture. He feels that a company should first develop a conducive culture, change employees' perception of life within the firm and foster quality among the personnel before it considers adopting a quality standard such as British Standard 5750 and Investment in People (IIP). The accounting firm's national organization has decided to start its involvement with the quality movement with a personal skills development program. The eight partners of the Glasgow office and 20 other managers all underwent the program. Pannell's 100 other personnel are scheduled to undergo the same training program within the next three-year period. In 1994, Pannell will seek a BS5750 or an IIP accreditation.
