Symbol turns to Web to market bar code

Symbol Technologies Inc. has established a World Wide Web site to market its bar code systems. The Web site address is 'http://www.symbol.com.' It contains 300 graphics files and 140 documents, some of which are in German, Spanish, French and Italian. Symbol plans to announce the Web site via a direct mail campaign. By the end of 1995, Symbol's salesmen will be using laptops and special software to download the latest company and product information. Virtual trade shows and conferences on the Web site are also being planned.

Calling all young, hip scientists: Pharmacia adopts consumer-style marketing
Article Abstract:
Pharmacia Biotech AB has launched a global, consumer-oriented advertising campaign to replace its stodgy researcher image with a high-tech, modern image that appeals to the young. Pharmacia plans to use customers who are enthusiastic about the human touch in the advertisements, which appear in Nature, Science and Biotechniques. The new image is being developed after market research showed that Pharmacia had a fragmented image caused by poor coordination of global advertising.

Three pharmaceutical firms have banded together to market products more easily and cheaply to doctors. Lyndhurst, NJ-based Medi-Promotions Inc., Somerset, NJ-based Formedic Communication Ltd. and New York, NY-based Prescribing References Inc. have all agreed to share market information and sales techniques. Medi-Promotions, for one, has a database covering 190,000 doctors which is being used for its direct mail program.
