In an excerpt from his new book, The Quest for Staff Leadership (1986, Scott, Foresman and Co.), Geoffrey Bellman outlines 10 principles that managers can use to become more effective leaders. The leadership role includes risk taking and decision making, having a vision and a strong commitment to it, adapting to change, recognizing the importance of organizational politics, being accountable, and knowing when to say 'no' and when to say 'yes'.

W. Edwards Deming: shogun of quality control

The statistician W. Edwards Deming is in favor of long-term supply contracts that result in confidence and trust between the supplier and the buyer. Deming has been given wide acclaim for helping the Japanese with their management style. Top management must eliminate fear from the work environment. Usually there is a difference in the way a job really is and the way the supervisor sees it.
