The co-evolution of capabilities and transaction costs: Explaining the institutional structure of production

Article Abstract:

The transaction costs and the capabilities that are fundamentally interviewed in the determination of vertical scope, is proposed. It is also argued that capability differences are a necessary condition for vertical specialization and that transaction cost reduction only lead to specialization when capabilities along the value chain are heterogeneous.

The article examines the role of dynamic capabilities, or those which create, modify, or extend a firm's ordinary capabilities. The relative success of these dynamic capabilities depends on the benefits and costs of the investments correlated with ad hoc problem solving.
