"The excited and dangerous state of the natives of Hawkes Bay": a particular study of the nineteenth century financial management

Article Abstract:

Gramocentric detail as embodied by documentation and well-defined recordkeeping is not valued in pre-literate societies. In these environments, accountability is proven by relying on oral testimony and ritual ceremony. However, during the 19th century, commercial disputes between Maori and Europeans in New Zealand were resolved by the colonial courts through documented evidence and not sworn testimony. Aside from merely providing efficient bookkeeping systems, colonial accountants also had broad discretionary authority when determining client liability in cases involving unresolved accounting problems of recognition and measurement. A case study on Sir Donald McLean's estate and his accountant demonstrates the gramocentric discipline of accounting on a pre-literate society. Accounting was employed to acquire Maori land and foster social disorder.

Boosey and Hawkes

Article Abstract:

Boosey and Hawkes owns publishing royalties to works by Richard Strauss and Aaron Copland, composers with anniversaries in 1999. The millennium is likely to stimulate musical retrospectives, and these two factors should help the company to increase its publishing profits, which dropped by 29% to 3.4 million pounds sterling in 1997. The company is cutting costs and reorganizing its publishing division, which should help profits for 1998. The instrument-making division is also performing well.
