The games retailers play

Article Abstract:

Game theory can be used to stimulate analytical and strategic thinking in retailers. Three well-known strategic games, the Prisoner's Dilemma, Tragedy of the Common and Boxed Pigs are matched with three issues on which retailers have to make strategic decisions, determine trading hours, analyze retail market saturation and develop innovative investment strategies. Players discuss the theoretical situations in the games, which are unrelated to retailing, and look for similarities to retail situations. Retail management students and practitioners find that the games broaden strategic thinking.

Just-in-Time as a competitive weapon: the significance of functional integration

Article Abstract:

Recent research has looked at the use of Just-in-Time (JIT) approaches across all areas of a company's activities, rather than simply in manufacturing and distribution. JIT can only be effectively implemented if functional integration is established, and this can in turn have a positive impact on a company's flexibility and efficiency. JIT will not necessarily be suitable for all companies, but can allow even very small manufacturing companies to expand very rapidly.
