Dell Computers won overall honors at the 1997 Alexander Hamilton Awards for treasury achievements. The awards recognizes the efforts of firms in areas including retirement plans, risk management, corporate finance, and investor relations. The team of chief financial officer Thomas Meredith and treasurer Alex Smith of Dell were able to bring the company up from a $39 million loss in 1993. The two also revived the declining stock prices of the firm from $2.83 in the same period to more than $100 in 1997.

Hewlett-Packard leads the corporate pack in training treasurers and financial officers. Training involves rotating finance executives through various operating units to expand their horizons. Unlike past training methods which focus on specific tasks only, current practices expose treasury people to multi-disciplined on-the-job training. Training develops treasury's credibility and enhances the skills of finance officers.

Treasurers should consider Overseas Private Investment Corp.'s political risk insurance offerings. Partially funded by the Congress, the agency has an average annual operating budget of $104 million and insurance underwriting capped at $23 billion. Political risk insurance covers asset damages resulting from civil strife or war, currency inconvertibility and government expropriation of corporate assets.
