On competition, risk, and hidden assets in the market for bank credit cards

Article Abstract:

The study presented a risk-return explanation concerning the generated returns of credit card banks and investigated the role of intangible or hidden assets in the premium for credit card receivables. It showed that over the period 1989 to 1995, accounting returns were significantly greater than ordinary return in banking and that credit-card banks were riskier than regular banks, particularly over the period 1984 to 1988. The study also demonstrated that greater accounting and market returns do not indicate a failure in competition or an irrational behaviour shown by cardholders.
