The industrial option

Article Abstract:

Discussions with the senior financial managers at British Petroleum Corp PLC, Unilever UK Holdings Ltd, and Reed International Plc find that, in general, larger businesses offer training opportunities and a structured career while smaller companies offer more pay. However, there are disadvantages in smaller companies. Often training is in hands of individual and upward mobility may entail moving from firm to firm. Recruiters look for honesty, enthusiasm, and a genuinely interested attitude in business. An accountants first job will usually last two years, and a new accountant can expect four different jobs in the first ten years. Accountants seeking jobs should: determine the type of environment they desire to work in; examine relevant activities in their backgrounds for inclusion on their resumes; and seek opportunities that both challenge and offer opportunities to learn about operations.

A practice of one's own

Article Abstract:

Chartered accountants in the UK can achieve success as sole practitioners. Chartered accountants setting up practice as sole practitioners need self-discipline. A technique used by one chartered accountant serving as a sole practitioner, Nigel Coghill, is to treat himself as a client by setting up a rigid management structure. Coghill writes down his goals and reviews them frequently in order to maintain objectivity, plan ahead, and control progress. Sole practitioners need to be realistic in order to avoid the practices that will lead to failure, bankruptcy, and exclusion from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
