The metabolic cost of backpack and shoulder load carriage

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to evaluate the metabolic cost of backpacking and shoulder load carriage. The study tested eleven male volunteer soldiers who walked at 4.8 km per hr for 5 minutes as they carried a 26kg load either on each shoulder or attached to a backpack frame. Results show that backpacking exhibited less metabolic cost than shoulder load carriage. In addition, it is assumed that shoulder load carriage can be tolerated but only over shorter periods of time.

Postural and subjective responses to realistic schoolbag carriage

Article Abstract:

Postural and subjective responses of students' carrying different schoolbag weights and shoulder strap tightness during a simulated day help provide evidence for an upper weight limit for daily schoolbag carriage. Results proved that a schoolbag weight limit of 10% of body weight for a typical school day is accepted.

Measurement of the temporal patterns of school bag carriage using activity monitoring and structured interview

Article Abstract:

A study attempts to quantify the temporal patterns of school bag carriage using activity monitoring and structured interviews. Results reveal discrepancies between the two methods of quantifying the temporal patterns of students' school bag carriage over a school day.
