The old master's art of selling

Article Abstract:

Christie's International PLC Finance Director David Tyler is a qualified management accountant and not an art expert. While Christie's sales rose 71% in 1989 and exceeded one billion pounds sterling for the first time, Christie's rival in the auction market, Sotheby's has a larger share of the market. The two auction houses compete fiercely, which helps Christie's remain oriented towards maximizing the efficiency of its operations. Christie's has followed Sotheby's lead in offering guaranteed sales, but Tyler insists that Christie's will not follow the lead of its rival in offering loans to its rivals. Tyler believes that the elimination of controls over the movement of art in the single European market of 1992 will lead to a expansion of the art market, to the benefit of Christie's.
