The return of the American military to crewed spaceflight: hypersonic and other visions

Article Abstract:

The military's aim to achieve control over crewed space flight in the 1950s was placed on hold with the creation of NASA and the termination of the Air Force's military projects that might have provided competition. NASA's control of the space program has been the underlying principle of the government's space policy ever since. However, evidence strongly suggest that the military might be making a significant return to the field of crewed orbital space flight under the auspices of the Defense Dept.
