The turnaround kid rides again

Article Abstract:

Chartered accountant Keith Hamill became part of the third corporate turnaround project in his career when he joined WH Smith Group as its finance director. He was previously involved in the recovery of Guinness and the hotel and leisure group Forte. Hamill believes that reviving retailer WH Smith can be done because the UK-based company has a very strong brand and attractive locations. In addition, new CEO Bill Cockburn has been implementing measures to improve company performance, including recruiting a new management team and divesting non-core operations. Hamill believes that his company has to focus on improving efficiency and on updating product ranges. He is convinced that WH Smith has to focus on internal operations rather than looking outside to see what its competitors are doing.

From racing Demon to Redbus driver

Article Abstract:

Entrepreneur Cliff Stanford is credited with pioneering internet access services in the UK. Following a stint at an accounting firm, Stanford developed an interest in computer programming which led to his founding of Demon Internet during the early 1990s. He credits the success of Demon to his background in accounting and his knowledge of computers. However, he also says that getting Demon off the ground was a difficult process. Stanford recently sold Demon to Scottish Telecom for 66 million pounds sterling. His next move was to establish the investment company, Redbus which will offer financing and consulting services to new companies. He claims that this is his way of giving companies the help he did not have when he started out.
