The shape of shopping to come

Article Abstract:

Information technology is revolutionizing the UK retail trade by enhancing central control and scientific marketing. Electronic point of sales systems (EPoS) capture information during sales. The information allows managers to make strategic decisions on marketing, inventory, and financial control. In the future, EPoS systems will encourage customers to buy items. Electronic funds transfer can be used to enhance links between retailers and customers and can be used to match customers with products. The technology will provide faster service, more customer choice, lower costs, and increased efficiency. Strategic marketing information from EPoS systems will enhance the effectiveness of corporate planning by integrating data from corporate, public, and other sources.

Fighting truth decay in the NHS

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Health Service has begun an intensive program of data and information collection among its units, districts, and regions to provide a centralized depot of management and operational knowledge of its health services. The program began in the 1970s with four different systems, which turned out to be incompatible with each other, data-heavy, and organizationally weak. Now, information is being gathered in a systematic way across all geographic and decision-making levels with a view to accommodating the needs of two cultures, the medical culture and the business-oriented management culture.
