The strange death of high-yield stocks

Article Abstract:

UK high-yield stocks have given a weak performance in 1996, though they should benefit from a bull market. There underperformance may be partly due to their becoming less scarce. Investor shave other ways of obtaining an income from shares such as special dividends and share buybacks, which have become more common. Shares may also rise in value because they have suffered a previous price fall and their price may not reflect their true position. If this is the case, then holders of high-yield stocks may yet see price rises.

The equity countdown may have begun

Article Abstract:

A bull market in shares may be ending, judging by data on Wall Street available in June 1996. Shares have fallen for eight consecutive days which is itself rare and this also follows a long period of high prices. A drop in US share prices would affect share prices in the UK. There could be a drop in share prices in Jul 1996 if a bear market has begun. Bear markets have tended to include July as is apparent from analysing UK data since 1920.
