The three muses

Article Abstract:

UK investors are being wooed by three companies offering investment trusts toward the end of the tax year. They are Perpetual, Schroder and M and G. Perpetual Income and Growth and M and G Equity will provide a high income compared to the average for the UK market. Schroder UK growth will focus on capital growth with a yield of 3%. There are other investment trusts which have a discount that could even be enough to compensate for dealing costs. These three trusts are what private investors are likely to hear about since they are being marketed strongly.

Paying more for good performance

Article Abstract:

UK unit trusts and investment trusts may charge performance-related fees and these may benefit both investors and fund managers but fees may also increase risk levels. Total costs increase with such fees and they come from the superior performance of the trust, supporters argue, while opponents argue that the increase in management fees from an increase in assets will itself reward performance. Investors should assess a number of factors such as the impact of currency translations and whether very short term targets are used.

Keep faith with UK funds

Article Abstract:

UK stock prices fell in early April 1997 and are likely to be volatile due to concern about US stocks, in turn affected by worries about interest rates. Investors should postpone decisions to purchase UK equities, but they should hold onto investments in shares or investment trusts and unit trusts. Shares are likely to be affected worldwide by trends in the US, and UK fundamentals appear positive. Alternatives to shares offer little advantage for long-term investors.
