The war game: new tactics come into play

Article Abstract:

The defense industry in the west has been greatly affected by the end of the cold war. Most American and European arms producers, faced with a sharp decline in defense spending in their home markets, have been forced to implement drastic restructuring programs. The UK's defense industry, which accounts for 11% of the country's manufacturing output and employs an estimated 540,000 people, has been particularly hard-hit by this downtrend in arms spending. While increased arms exports to countries in the Middle East and Asia could provide some relief for the industry, many of the over 400 companies in the UK's defense sector have concluded that the key to their survival is to reduce their dependence on defense contracts. The difficult task of diversifying into commercial markets has thus become a top priority in many of these firms.

Let's hear it for the unsung hero

Article Abstract:

The UK's sound recording industry contributes substantially to the country's economy. Aside from providing some 50,000 jobs, mostly to the youth, the industry turns in big profits. In 1990 alone, its export earnings were estimated to be at around 800 million pounds sterling. Although the recorded music is a lucrative business, it is also very risky and costly. Record labels spend huge sums to attract the better known artists. They also have to accept the fact that only a handful of the albums they will release will sell well. In 1991, only 312 of the 10,800 albums released in the UK reached the Top 40 chart. Furthermore, record companies have to contend with piracy. Being one of the leaders in pop music recording, the UK will benefit tremendously if efforts to have the copyright law enforced internationally succeed.
