There's better value at Safeway

Article Abstract:

Safeway has increased volume sales despite intense price competition among UK supermarkets. Volume growth allows the company to offer low prices. Safeway's Shop and Go system permits customers to avoid queues by using scanners. Safeway's ABC loyalty card gives detailed information on customer preferences, helping with targeted promotions. Safeway is co-operating with Abbey National to introduce a debit card. The company has also launched a share buy-back scheme and is the only major UK food retailer to do so.

Asda

Article Abstract:

Asda is a UK supermarket retailer which has seen high sales growth but also faces competition. The company is still behind major rivals such as Sainsbury and Tesco and is launching new marketing ideas which are also being used by rivals. The company's image should be improved by ideas such as redemption of competitors' vouchers, but sales will be less affected. The company's profit is forecast at 290 million pounds sterling for 1995 to 1996 by SBC Warburg, after an upgrade from 275 million pounds.
