This time, M&A madness is tempered with caution

Article Abstract:

The major factors driving the current merger and acquisition trends are discussed in the light of Journal register Co.'s acquisition of 21st Century Newspapers. The Securities and Exchange Commission's accommodation with regard to the time period within which the acquirer gets the acquired firms' books in compliance, the trend of mergers through cash transactions rather than stock deals, and the usage of discounted cash flow to evaluate merger and acquisition deals are discussed.

The direct cost of employee absences at U.S. companies averaged 15% of payroll in 2002. According to the Mercer/Marsh report, 77% of the 723 companies surveyed don't even isolate the cost of disability leaves.
